West Hills College Coalinga Honors Top Students
The annual West Hills College Coalinga Honors Brunch was held Friday morning in the college dining hall with more than 80 students receiving awards for their academic and athletic achievements.
Among the scholarships given, were the President’s Scholars awards, which cover tuition and books for two years to top students. President Willard Lewallen announced that next year about 20 President’s Scholars are expected to attend WHCC.
This year’s President’s Scholars included: Heather Alvarado, Marisol Amezcua, Ruth Bailey, Alexander Balderaz, Oscar Barrera, Samantha Cazares, Eric Davis, Rebecca Dickens, Johanna Grajeda, John Jennings, Lizbeth Juarez, Maria Carmen Martinez, Jeffrey Seed, Brenda Soto, Victor Villar, Danielle Vivanco and Josh Warren.
Baseball Coach Paul Hogsdon announced that all 10 sophomores on this year’s baseball team have earned athletic scholarships to four-year colleges including University of the Pacific and Hawaii Pacific University. Last semester the team had a cumulative grade point average of 3.1 and David White, the WHCC student athlete of the year, had a 3.9 GPA and earned all conference honors.
The sophomores compiled 43 wins during their two years at WHCC including victories over top-ranked Fresno City College and Santa Ana City College Teams.
Other baseball team members, their transfer schools and athletic honors are: Troy Hamilton – Missouri Baptist – All Conference; Dylan Lightell – Missouri Baptist – All Conference; Caleb Oaks – Dickinson State; Gabe Rodriguez – Dickinson State; CJ Hawkins – Texas Southern/Southern University; Julius Frierson – Texas Southern/Southern University; Eric Graley – Hawaii Pacific and Isaac Vivas - University of the Pacific.
A number of memorial scholarships were given including: Barbara Devine Memorial Scholarship-Rebecca Dickens; Marlon Hall Jr. Memorial Scholarship-Kari Ainsworth; Maxine McIntyre Memorial Scholarship-Eric Davis;
Marion Basham Scholarship-Antonio Gomez; Manual Toste Scholarship-Stan Branco;
Norine Oliver Memorial Scholarship-Robert Wallace; Wolfenberger Family Scholarship-Shane Kiely; Robert & Collette Keller Scholarship-Imelda Ortiz;
Sawyer Family Scholarship-Julian Dagnino; Wakefield Everett Memorial Scholarship-Heather Allen; Farm of the Future-Shane Kiely; Fellowship of Christian Athletes-Habeeb Rafiu; J & R Rodriguez Enterprises-Leonardo Villalobos; NDC Scholarship-Rocio Luna; Nick & Edna Ivans Scholarship-Jodi Gongora; Padilla Family Scholarship-Sylvia Leon;
Watts Family Scholarship-Consuelo Aguilar; WHCC General Scholarships-Jodee Rowden and Melchor Santillan.
ASB Scholarships were awarded to Guadalupe Camacho, Jamie Marcus Martinez, Norma Carpenter and Yvonne Daphne Lopez.
Outstanding Tutor Award went to Dolores Gonzalez, Martina Ivarsson, Elijah Shittu and David White.
Tutoring Awards and Certificates-Tik Yi (Joyce) Chan, Jason Del Toro, Jennifer Duncan, William Elliott, Dolores Gonzalez, Wing Yee Ho, Martina Ivarsson, Ryusuke Naito, Christina Sanchez, Jessica Schendel, Elijah Shittu, Latanya Stiner, Yu Wai Tong, Lorena Vargas, David White and Roxie Wong.
Other transferring athletic scholarships and awards went to: Basketball-

Adrian McLeod, Chaphan Johnson and Jerome Nihipali and Haziz Rafiu – University of Mary, North Dakota.
Academic All State and JC Grid Wire Academic All- American William “Skyler” Norris.
Softball-Jodi Gongora, First Team All Conference; Vollyball-Heather Allen –Academy of Art
Awards were also presented for a number of programs including:
EOP&S-Outstanding Student Mayra Mejia at NDC and Latanya Stiner at Coalinga, Inspirational Students Maricela Hernandez and Jessica Cantu at NDC and Norma Carpenter and Jaime Jacobo.
CARE Outstanding Student Sylvia Leyva at NDC.
DSPS Outstanding Students Robert Wallace and Imelda Ortiz, Inspirational Student
Maria Barragan.
