From Juvenile Hall to J.D., Carissa Phelps Shares Story AT WHCL Leadership Conference
As a teen, Carissa Phelps cycled through the Fresno juvenile justice system. She credits a C.K. Wakefield School counselor with helping her turn her life around. Phelps tells her story in the new documentary Carissa and she’ll also tell it at a leadership conference slated for WHCL on Friday, March 28th from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the college’s conference center.
Porterville College President Rosa Flores Carlson will join Phelps as a keynote speaker. The conference is open to the public and is free of charge.
Phelps is currently a community organizer and spokesperson for youth working on transforming dangerous, marginal neighborhoods into places of light, culture and safety.
She graduated summa cum laude from Fresno State University with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. She graduated from UCLA with a Juris Doctorate and a master’s in business administration.
Dr. Carlson attended Fresno City College and received bachelor’s degrees in foreign languages and classical studies and a master’s in educational administration and supervision from Fresno State. She also holds a degree in educational leadership from the joint UC Davis and Fresno State doctoral program.
Working in the field of education for more than 23 years, Dr. Carlson has served as associate dean of instruction at Reedley College, the director of educational services for State Center Community College District and vice president of academic services at College of the Sequoias. She has also taught in the classroom and has received numerous honors throughout the community.
“We are really excited about this leadership conference,” said Jose Lopez, dean of student services. “We are hoping that the guest speakers and workshops will be useful for those who attend.”
